Résumé : |
Background. Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy Including Lower Extremities (HABIT-ILE) is one of the recommended interventions to improve motor function of children with unilateral (UCP) and bilateral (BCP) cerebral palsy. As this is a recent intervention, its effects and practice setting have not yet been reviewed. This is the objective of this work.
Method. Three electronic databases (CINAHL, Embase, and Medline) were examined. The methodological framework for scoping reviews was followed (Arksey & O’Malley, 2005 ; Levac et al., 2010), as well as the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis recommendations for reviews (Page et al., 2021).
Results. Of the 63 studies identified, 15 studies were included. The population consisted of children with UCP and BCP aged 1 to 18 years with mild to severe activity limitations. The HABIT-ILE methodology was adapted in terms of number of hours of practice and type of activity according to the age and topography of the impairment. Improvements in manual ability, gross motor skills and performance in daily life were observed after HABIT-ILE. Preliminary results show improvements in cognitive function and other body structures and functions after HABIT-ILE.
Conclusion. Improvements in motor function following HABIT-ILE were observed in a large panel of children with cerebral palsy. These results could pave the way for a better understanding of the potential clinical application of this type of approach despite organizational barriers. |

Résumé : |
Context. Because of a historical and cultural legacy, mothers of children with disabilities are assigned to technical caring activities that children require. This population, particularly at risk of occupational disorders, may constitute a possible intervention target for occupational therapists (OT) who are increasingly interested in natural caregivers in their daily practices. Purpose. The aim of this study is to understand these mothers’ process of caring skills development that enables self-adaptation to these activities, in order to help OT to better support their occupational balance. Method. Following a qualitative research method, three semi-structured interviews based on explicitation interview techniques were conducted with concerned mothers. Data were analyzed with a structural analysis method in order to identify a common skill acquisition process among these mothers. Results. These mothers develop specific skills in these activities in three different ways: through theoretical teaching, practice with professional caregivers, and personal experimentation. Personal experimentation plays a particularly important role in this process because mothers show reflexive processes during this phase, whereas they simply restored acquired knowledge before it. Conclusion. According to this study, mothers self-adapt to these technical caring activities by developing lay caring skills. These skills would be developed thanks to an acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge. This study, which defends the need to recognize the expertise of these mothers, supports the role OT can play in supporting the occupational adaptation these mothers are going through and in searching for occupational balance. |

Résumé : |
occupational therapists in private practice?
Objectives. To describe the lack of knowledge of the occupational therapist’s fields of competence on the part of the family, the child, and the professionals. To analyse the dissociation between the initial motive and the established support objectives.
Method. This was a qualitative and quantitative study using a questionnaire.
Results. The survey concerned 90 private-practice occupational therapists. It underlines the limited knowledge of occupational therapy among both the families and the professionals motivating the assessment. The client-centred approach allows for the emergence of new occupational goals at the end of the assessment.
Conclusion. Involving the child with her/his parents in the assessment process by providing additional knowledge about occupational therapy and about occupations allows added support goals to merge that are different from the original goals. |

Résumé : |
Context. Young people in Institut medico-éducatif (IME) with intellectual disabilities (ID) have a low occupational performance in activities of daily living. There is little literature on occupational therapy support in this area, especially on assessments. An occupational therapy intervention for a youngster with difficulties in eating by himself shows the difficulty of acting in a client-centred way. Intervention. Follow-up is described through the use of the OTIPM: assessment is carried out without validated assessment tools, which leads to biases in practice ; the intervention is partly occupation-focused and reassessment is carried out. Finding. The follow-up is not client-centred, and the assessment is not standardised, which keeps us away from the core of occupational therapy. We are therefore looking for solutions in order to develop a more science-based practice. Perspectives. A thorough search of existing assessments shows that some tools are available, even if there are only few of them. In order to achieve a client-centred follow-up, it is necessary to include the family and the youngster from the beginning of the intervention, which may imply a change in practice in IME-type facilities. Conclusion. It would be interesting to create new tools for observing occupational performance of young people with ID. It would also be necessary to expand the scientific occupational therapy literature on interventions with young people with ID living in IMEs. |

Résumé : |
The transition to retirement is a life stage that puts daily life to the test by changing roles and occupations. This paper questions the legitimacy of occupational therapists’ intervention to positively support people in this transition.
A quantitative study of thirty-two young retirees explored their life balance and their involvement in meaningful activities. Their need for support and their knowledge of occupational therapy were also explored. At the same time, a qualitative survey was carried out, based on the analysis of seven semi-directive interviews with four occupational therapists, two medical doctors and a psychologist working in the field of prevention with senior citizens. Its results reflect the healthcare professionals’ interest in developing a preventive and occupational approach to the transition to retirement. They support the modalities of this approach by emphasizing interprofessionality.
Social factors’ influence is developed under discussion. It is also up to occupational science to promote the role of occupational therapy in this area of prevention. |
