Effect of Bathroom Aids and Age on Balance Control During Bathing Transfers. / Emily C King in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 71/6 (2017)
[article]
Titre : Effect of Bathroom Aids and Age on Balance Control During Bathing Transfers. Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Emily C King, Auteur ; Alison C. Novak, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p.1-9 Langues : Américain (ame) Mots-clés : Bains Équipement sanitaire Accidents domestiques chute Facteurs de l'âge Résumé : Bathroom assistive devices are used to improve safety during bathing transfers, but biomechanical evidence to support clinical recommendations is lacking. This study evaluated the effectiveness of common bathroom aids in promoting balance control during bathing transfers. Twenty-six healthy adults (12 young, 14 older) stepped into and out of a slippery bathtub while using a vertical grab baron the side wall, a horizontal grab bar on the back wall, a bath mat, a side wall touch, or no assistance. Balance control was characterized using center of pressure measures and showed greater instability for older adults. The vertical grab bar and wall touch resulted in the safest (best controlled) transfers. The bath mat provided improved balance control in the axis parallel to the bathtub rim but was equivalent to no assistance perpendicular to the rim, in the direction of obstacle crossing. These results can support clinical recommendations for safe bathing transfers. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=56171

Titre : Development of Internet-Based Tasks for the Executive Function Performance Test. The Executive Function Performance Test (EFPT) is a reliable and valid performance-based tool to assess executive functions (EFs). This study's objective was to develop and verify two Internet-based tasks for the EFPT. METHOD. A cross-sectional study assessed the alternate-form reliability of the Internet-based bill-paying and telephone-use tasks in healthy adults and people with subacute stroke (Study 1). It also sought to establish the tasks' criterion reliability for assessing EF deficits by correlating performance with that on the Trail Making Test in five groups: healthy young adults, healthy older adults, people with subacute stroke, people with chronic stroke, and young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Study 2). RESULTS. The alternative-form reliability and initial construct validity for the Internet-based bill-paying task were verified. Criterion validity was established for both tasks. CONCLUSION. The Internet-based tasks are comparable to the original EFPT tasks and can be used for assessment of EF deficits. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=60745
