Exclu du prêtEffect of Bathroom Aids and Age on Balance Control During Bathing Transfers. / Emily C King in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 71/6 (2017)
[article]
Titre : Effect of Bathroom Aids and Age on Balance Control During Bathing Transfers. Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Emily C King, Auteur ; Alison C. Novak, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p.1-9 Langues : Américain (ame) Mots-clés : Bains Équipement sanitaire Accidents domestiques chute Facteurs de l'âge Résumé : Bathroom assistive devices are used to improve safety during bathing transfers, but biomechanical evidence to support clinical recommendations is lacking. This study evaluated the effectiveness of common bathroom aids in promoting balance control during bathing transfers. Twenty-six healthy adults (12 young, 14 older) stepped into and out of a slippery bathtub while using a vertical grab baron the side wall, a horizontal grab bar on the back wall, a bath mat, a side wall touch, or no assistance. Balance control was characterized using center of pressure measures and showed greater instability for older adults. The vertical grab bar and wall touch resulted in the safest (best controlled) transfers. The bath mat provided improved balance control in the axis parallel to the bathtub rim but was equivalent to no assistance perpendicular to the rim, in the direction of obstacle crossing. These results can support clinical recommendations for safe bathing transfers. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=56171

Exclu du prêtHome Safety Fall and Accident Risk Among Prematurely Aging, Formerly Homeless Adults. / Sharon A. Gutman in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 72/4 (Juillet-Aout 2018)
[article]
Titre : Home Safety Fall and Accident Risk Among Prematurely Aging, Formerly Homeless Adults. Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sharon A. Gutman, Auteur ; Kevin Amarantos, Auteur ; Jan Berg, Auteur Année de publication : 2018 Article en page(s) : 1-9p. Langues : Américain (ame) Mots-clés : Sans-abri Logement social Accidents domestiques Autosoins chute Résumé : OBJECTIVE. Homelessness prematurely ages people. A large subgroup of formerly homeless adults between ages 40 and 64 yr have health conditions similar to or worse than people categorized as elderly. Little is known about the impact of this group's chronic health conditions on their ability to safely function in supportive housing. METHOD. Home safety visits were carried out with 25 formerly homeless adults, ages 40-64 yr, now residing in supportive housing. RESULTS. Participants had physical, cognitive, and mental health problems that significantly interfered with their ability to perform daily life skills, safely function in an apartment, and manage chronic health conditions. Home safety hazards included cluttered walking paths, the presence of steps, and the lack of grab bars and nonskid flooring. CONCLUSION. The homeless population would benefit from aging specialists, such as occupational therapists, who could help people to maintain and function more safely in their homes. Without such services, this population may be at risk for home safety events leading to hospitalization and mortality. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=77800
