Culture # TsiganesRésumé : "Since 1999, there has been increasing settlement in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, of large numbers of Roma families from Hungary, seeking refugee status. A number of agencies across health, social services, education, immigration, child welfare and justice sectors were concerned about the Roma population’s difficulties within these systems and the ability of these systems to provide effective services to the Roma population. The goal of the Roma Project was to promote deeper understanding of Roma peoples and their culture in order to inform more effective and culturally appropriate service delivery in addressing the needs of the Roma population. Focus group and key informant interviews with Roma community members and service providers were used to assess need in education, health care and social welfare domains. Analysis of the data produced recommendations for best practices in working with the Roma newcomers." Permalink : http://cdocs.helha.be/pmblln/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14041

A set of characteristics of 163 localities—including socio-economic status, religion, nationality, geography, demography and social services availability—was used to explore possible links with these indicators." Culture # Religions # Spiritualité # Travailleurs sociauxMots-clés : Religion Spiritualité Travail social Travailleur social Culture Compétence Intervention Résumé : "Findings from surveys of qualified social work practitioners and students indicate a need for social work education and practice to focus attention both on the importance of religious and spiritual beliefs in the lives of many service users and on the potential usefulness of religious and spiritual interventions. In this British study, undertaken in 2003 and 2004, students were less likely than their qualified colleagues to consider religious or spiritually sensitive interventions as appropriate. Attitudes varied little between those students who held religious beliefs and those who did not, but Muslim students and qualified social workers were more likely to view these types of interventions as appropriate. The authors conclude that there is a clear need for all social work practitioners and educators to give greater priority to exploring the potential significance of religious and spiritual beliefs in their training, in their professional practice and in the lives and perspectives of service users and colleagues."
