Société de consommationMots-clés : Travail social Responsabilité Profession Consommation Résumé : "Within a very short space of time, the concept of personalization has come to occupy a central place within dominant social work and adult care discourses within the UK. Through an analysis of one influential model of personalization, this paper will explore the factors behind the concept’s current popularity. I shall argue that this popularity is due primarily to its congruence with key themes of New Labour thought, including individualization, responsibilization and the transfer of risk from the state to the individual. I shall conclude that, given its acceptance of the marketization of social work and social care, its neglect of issues of poverty and inequality, its flawed conception of the people who use social work services, its potentially stigmatizing view of welfare dependency and its potential for promoting, rather than challenging, the deprofessionalization of social work, the philosophy of personalization is not one that social workers should accept uncritically." Démence # Santé mentaleMots-clés : Démence Santé mentale Soins Résumé : "Internationally, interest is developing in the challenges of developing evidence-based guidelines for social work practice. The paper reports on the process of establishing the UK’s first joint health and social care evidence-based practice guideline, which is in dementia care. The paper addresses the methodological and procedural challenges of reviewing, meta-analysing and synthesizing knowledge for health and social care given the contrasting histories of the two sectors in relation to the emergence of evidence-based practice. Dementia care is a complex domain within which social and clinical perspectives intersect, reinforcing the desirability of producing ‘joined up’ health and social care practice guidelines that are relevant to integrated services. It is suggested that the exemplar of producing a joint health and social care guideline for dementia may be a model for future development of practice guidelines. Some of the main recommendations are presented to illustrate the character of the joint guideline, lessons are drawn for future guideline development, and implications for policy and practice implementation are considered." MarginalitéMots-clés : Adulte Violence Marginalité Famille Résumé : "Elder abuse is recognized as a major problem, with profound effects on the health and quality of life of older persons. In our aging population, elder abuse represents an escalating clinical issue for social workers and health care professionals who provide care to older people. A major gap in our examination of elder abuse is the potential contribution and application of knowledge developed within research derived from other forms of family violence. This paper explores the interconnections among various forms of violence across the lifespan, and the experiences voiced by marginalized elders and their care providers. We interviewed seventy-seven rarely consulted older adults and forty-three formal and informal care-givers of older adults in focus groups in Ontario and Alberta, Canada. Study findings revealed four major themes that describe interconnections among types of abuse: (i) intergenerational cycles of abuse; (ii) violence across the lifespan; (iii) exposure to multiple subtypes of elder abuse; and (iv) ongoing spouse abuse that shifted into elder abuse. The results from this study indicate that victims often ‘suffer in silence’ and cultural factors, ageism and gender are ubiquitous to elder abuse. Recommendations to reduce elder abuse include education, formal and informal supports and services." Permalink : http://cdocs.helha.be/pmblln/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=12810

Culture # Émigration et immigrationMots-clés : Culture Intégration Immigration Résumé : "Today, in North America, the idea of complete assimilation of immigrants no longer seems relevant. Under the commonly espoused ideologies of multiculturalism and pluralism, the goal of social work with immigrants is now integration into the host society, whether that be economically, socially and/or psychologically (Li, 2003). However, critics argue that the traditional idea of immigrant assimilation continues to lurk behind social policies and social services for immigrants, in that the successful integration of immigrants is prompted by their conformation to the dominant culture (Balgopal, 2000). While a growing body of literature on social work with immigrants has resulted in an increased understanding of this diverse population and its needs, the literature still lacks coherent theoretical and ideological frameworks necessary to inform effective models of service delivery. Social work literature on immigrants also requires critical interrogation of the impact of social science theories, particularly in terms of long-held assumptions of culture and acculturation. In this paper, a critical review of literature on acculturation and social work with immigrants will be followed by findings of a qualitative study with skilled immigrants in Canada. Based on the research findings, an anti-oppressive approach to social work with immigrants is proposed." Permalink : http://cdocs.helha.be/pmblln/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=12811
