Occupational therapy interventions to improve performance of daily activities at home for older adults with low vision / Chiung-Ju LIU in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 67/3 (mai-juin 2013)
[article]
Titre : Occupational therapy interventions to improve performance of daily activities at home for older adults with low vision : a systematic review Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Chiung-Ju LIU ; Melodie A. BROST ; et al. ; Vanessa E. HORTON Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : p. 279-287 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Activités vie quotidienne Age Trouble vision Revue de littérature Résumé : The impact of age-related vision loss on older adults' independence at home is profound. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify the effectiveness of interventions within the scope of occupational therapy practice to maintain, restore, and improve performance in daily activities at home for older adults with low vision. We searched and screened abstracts from multiple electronic databases and identified 17 studies that fulfilled our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three themes in intervention approaches emerged: multicomponent intervention, single-component intervention, and multidisciplinary intervention. Strong evidence of effectiveness was found in studies that applied a multicomponent approach; these interventions involved teaching knowledge and skills that older adults with low vision need to help overcome the disablement process. Evidence also suggests that multiple sessions of training with low vision devices and special viewing skills to compensate for vision loss are necessary to have a positive effect on daily activities. Finally, multidisciplinary intervention that focused on personal goals yielded greater positive outcomes than interventions that were not personalized. Titre : Occupational Therapy Use by Older Adults With Cancer Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Mackenzi PERGOLOTTI ; Malcom P. CUTCHIN ; Morris WEINBERGER ; et al. Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p. 597-607 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Cancer Personne âgée Ergothérapie Qualité vie Résumé : Occupational therapy may significantly improve cancer survivors’ ability to participate in activities, thereby improving quality of life. Little is known, however, about the use of occupational therapy services by adults with cancer. The objective of this study was to understand what shapes patterns of occupational therapy use to help improve service delivery. We examined older (age >65 yr) adults diagnosed with breast, prostate, lung, or melanoma (skin) cancer between 2004 and 2007 (N = 27,131) using North Carolina Central Cancer Registry data linked to Medicare billing claims. Survivors who used occupational therapy within 1 yr before their cancer diagnosis were more likely to use occupational therapy after diagnosis but also experienced the highest levels of comorbidities. Survivors with Stage 4 cancers or lung cancer were less likely to use occupational therapy. These findings suggest possible disparities in utilization of occupational therapy by older adults with cancer. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33768

DisponibleOccupational Therapy Wellness Program / Julie KUGEL in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 70/5 (septembre-octobre 2016)
[article]
Titre : Occupational Therapy Wellness Program : Youth and Parent Perspectives Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Julie KUGEL ; Crystal HEMBERGER ; Dragana KRPALEK ; et al. Année de publication : 2016 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ergothérapie Activités vie quotidienne Adolescent Comportement santé Promotion santé Habitude Parent Bien être Résumé : OBJECTIVE. In this study, we explored the impact of an occupational therapy wellness program on daily habits and routines through the perspectives of youth and their parents.
METHOD. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with children and their parents, the Pizzi Healthy Weight Management Assessment©, and program activities.
RESULTS. Three themes emerged from the interviews: Program Impact, Lessons Learned, and Time as a Barrier to Health. The most common areas that both youth and parents wanted to change were time spent watching television and play, fun, and leisure time. Analysis of activity pie charts indicated that the youth considerably increased active time in their daily routines from Week 1 to Week 6 of the program.
CONCLUSION. An occupational therapy program focused on health and wellness may help youth and their parents be more mindful of their daily activities and make health behavior changes.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=45640
