Effect of a Motor-Based Role-Play Intervention on the Social Behaviors of Adolescents With High-Functioning Autism / Sharon A. Gutman in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 66/5 (septembre-octobre 2012)
[article]
Titre : Effect of a Motor-Based Role-Play Intervention on the Social Behaviors of Adolescents With High-Functioning Autism : Multiple-Baseline Single-Subject Design Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Sharon A. Gutman ; Emily I. Raphael-Greenfield ; Ashwini K. RAO Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p. 529-537 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Jeu rôle Autisme Comportement social Résumé : OBJECTIVE. We examined the effect of a motor-based role-play intervention on the social skills of adolescents with high-functioning autism.
METHOD. An ABA multiple-baseline design with three 3-mo phases occurring over 12 mo was used with 7 participants. Frequency of targeted verbal and nonverbal behaviors was tallied in each phase. Frequency data were analyzed using repeated-measures analyses of variance with post hoc comparisons to examine differences in targeted behaviors over the three phases.
RESULTS. Three participants completed all three study phases, 2 completed Phase 2, and 2 completed Phase 1. All participants (N = 7) demonstrated improved social skill use in Phase 1. Participants completing Phase 2 (n = 5) further improved social skill use. Additional improvements were observed among participants (n = 3) who completed Phase 3.
CONCLUSION. The intervention helped participants improve targeted social skill use. Further testing with larger samples and intervention modifications is warranted.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14054

Titre : Occupational Therapy in Neurological Disorders : looking Ahead to the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Centennial Vision Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ashwini K. RAO Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p. 749 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Médecine fondée sur les preuves Recherche Réadaptation Neurologie Résumé : The Centennial Vision articulated by the American Occupational Therapy Association includes moving the profession to being science driven and evidence based. The American Journal of Occupational Therapy contributes to this vision by publishing high-quality research. I reviewed research in the practice area of neurological rehabilitation published between May 2010 and October 2011. In particular, I reviewed effectiveness and efficacy studies, instrument development and testing, and basic research studies. Concerns emerging from the review were (1) few studies in neurological rehabilitation; (2) many disorders not represented; (3) exclusive use of impairment-level outcomes in some studies; and (4) high preponderance of case series designs in effectiveness studies. To achieve the Centennial Vision, the field needs to improve the volume and diversity of research in neurological rehabilitation. It is also important to modify academic and clinical practice to enable occupational therapists to spend more time in producing high-quality evidence to support the crucial role they play in neurological rehabilitation. Exclu du prêtSystematic review of the effects of exercise on activities of daily living in people with Alzheimer's disease / Ashwini K. RAO in American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol. 68/1 (janvier-février 2014)

Titre : Systematic review of the effects of exercise on activities of daily living in people with Alzheimer's disease Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ashwini K. le résultat du traitementLangues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ergothérapie Activités vie quotidienne Démence Alzheimer Revue de littérature Résumé : OBJECTIVE. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) results in a loss of independence in activities of daily living (ADLs), which in turn affects the quality of life of affected people and places a burden on caretakers. Limited research has examined the influence of physical training (aerobic, balance, and strength training) on ADL performance of people with AD.
METHOD. Six randomized controlled trials (total of 446 participants) fit the inclusion criteria. For each study, we calculated effect sizes for primary and secondary outcomes.
RESULTS. Average effect size (95% confidence interval) for exercise on the primary outcome (ADL performance) was 0.80 (p < .001). Exercise had a moderate impact on the secondary outcome of physical function (effect size = 0.53, p = .004).
CONCLUSION. Occupational therapy intervention that includes aerobic and strengthening exercises may help improve independence in ADLs and improve physical performance in people with AD. Additional research is needed to identify specific components of intervention and optimal dosage to develop clinical guidelines.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=19452
