StressRésumé : "Social work students and social workers are being encouraged to become more resistant to stress. Sense of coherence, challenge appraisals, self-efficacy and sense of control are important psychological concepts that are of significance in helping social workers and social work students become more resilient in their approach. Sense of coherence is focused on health and strengths. Challenge appraisals involve perceiving ?difficult? situations in more positive ways. Self-efficacy relates to beliefs and confidence in one's abilities to undertake tasks. Sense of control involves the exercise of personal and professional agency and one's capacity to influence and change situations. These psychological concepts are explored and their implications for social workers and social work students are considered." They cope with long established limitations on the quantity and quality of placements. Therefore, the role would appear to be a stressful one. This research examines job satisfaction, pressure and constraints, psychological well-being, the impact of the host institution, and some changes that might alleviate stress. A postal questionnaire was sent to all placement co-ordinators on college-based social work courses in the UK. The findings indicated that small numbers of placement co-ordinators experienced high levels of stress to the point of suffering from ‘borderline’ anxiety and depression. Stress scores for placement co-ordinators as a whole, however, were lower than those of the general UK population. The co-ordinators enjoyed considerable autonomy and a reasonable amount of support. Generally, they had positive attitudes towards the institutions where they worked. Males tended to emphasize the importance of the institutional context rather than females. However, around half of the placement co-ordinators had considered giving up their posts; only about a quarter liked their work. Respondents enjoyed only limited job satisfaction, felt pressurized, subject to excessive demands and were ambivalent in attitudes about managers, colleagues, students and practice teachers." These developments take place within contemporary society, where there is an emphasis on individualism, individualization and identity politics. This article examines the role of collectives in the early years of the twenty-first century. It examines Ferguson and Lavallette’s (2004) examples of collective approaches from a critical perspective, considering the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches and their contribution to social work practice. The examples of collective approaches include, first, groups of workers coming together within and across agencies; second, the development of strong, work-based union organizations; third, the recognition of the importance of groupwork and community development approaches; fourth, learning from and working with collective user movements; and, finally, learning from challenges to global capitalism such as the anti-capitalist movement. The article highlights the positives and great potential of collective approaches, but also includes some words of caution, noting that collectives are one amongst several ways of approaching interactions in social work."
