Résumé : |
"Government plans to reform social work in England, led by the Social Work Reform Board, have resulted in far-reaching changes to social work education. These include establishment of The College of Social Work and adoption of its Professional Capability Framework, and transfer of regulation to the Health and Care Professions Council whose Standards of Proficiency competences gate-keep the threshold to practice. A critical scrutiny of the literature on competence and capability used by the architects of change provides a lens with which to explore findings from a content analysis of the new standards. Comparisons are made with the 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) competences approved by the American Council on Social Work Education." |

Résumé : |
"This paper discusses a social work research project that used critical reflection as the method of inquiry to explore the problem of sexual assault practitioners' sense of powerlessness to bring about change in the legal system. Using critical reflection as both an educational tool and a research methodology enabled the practitioners who participated in this Australian research to privilege narratives of empowerment and change, through uncovering possibilities for envisaging personal agency to respond to legal system injustices." |

Résumé : |
"This article sets controversies surrounding Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) and the current standing of the social work profession in a comparative framework to support our central hypothesis that the social politics of social work are related to the welfare regimes in which they are embedded. The article suggests that professional social work ‘practice identities’ in liberal-type welfare regimes, such as Great Britain and Ireland, develop in the context of residual-type welfare regimes, while social work ‘practice identities’ in social democratic-type welfare regimes, as exemplified by the Nordic countries, are embedded in universal-type welfare regimes and social care systems." |

Résumé : |
"This article explores the experiences of undergraduate students who participated in a theatre-based, peer-education, sexual assault prevention intervention presentation. The programme was established and informed through the use of two models of Theatre for Social Change theory and practice: Theatre of the Oppressed and Theatre for Community, Conflict, and Dialogue. Both models emphasise a collaborative leadership style and process, which includes subverting social norms, an ethic of care and collaboratively constructing communal knowledge. Data were collected via focus group interviews, field notes and peer debriefing after each performance. Data reveal valuable implications for future practice and research development." |

Résumé : |
"The threshold at which state social work services respond to children who may have been maltreated has been the subject of debate in the UK and elsewhere over a number of years. This paper presents a conceptual model that helps to explain how threshold decisions are made, based on a review of research in the UK and elsewhere. A range of factors were found to affect thresholds, including the nature of the welfare concerns for the child, the policy and organisational circumstances, the role of collaborative practice amongst a range of professionals, and the decision making of front line social workers, teams and managers." |

Résumé : |
"This paper reports qualitative findings from a mixed-methods evaluation of an intervention for families affected by substance misuse and child protection concerns. The study involved twenty-seven families, including eighty-four children. The data illustrate the various impacts of substance misuse on family life, including neglect, instability and physical and sexual abuse. During semi-structured interviews, many of the parents went some way to counter highly stigmatised identities through confessing previous parental failings and demonstrating the distance they have travelled since then." |

Résumé : |
"Adoption can provide stability and improved outcomes for looked after children, but the support needs of adoptive families range from financial support to managing difficult behaviours and attachment problems. This study looks at the use of services and associated costs over a six-month period through data collected from nineteen adoptive parents six months after a child (average age twenty-three months) had been placed with them for adoption and at the patterns of service needs, usefulness of services and satisfaction with services, supplemented with data from twenty-seven families who were interviewed about their experience of post-adoption support." |

Résumé : |
"A range of studies document the characteristics of children placed in out-of-home care, who experience many placement breakdowns and unhappy reunifications with their biological families. However, few of these studies have documented the characteristics of children who experience great overall placement instability—or complexity—throughout their entire period as minors." |

Résumé : |
"This article discusses the use of an RCT in the national evaluation of Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care for Adolescents (MTFC-A) in the English care system. A number of challenges were encountered in recruiting young people to the trial. These included professional anxieties about randomisation, concerns about accountability, a wish to maintain managerial control over allocations to expensive resources and the small number of MTFC-A places available in each local area, which meant that new placements became available infrequently." |
