Résumé : |
"The intense media and political scrutiny that has long been associated with decisions made by social workers about child protection is now increasingly being seen in the criminal justice arena with regard to assessment of offenders who may present a risk of serious harm to other people. However, there has so far been little academic consideration of the decisions made by youth justice workers concerning young people who may pose a risk to others. This paper presents analysis of data collected from youth offending teams relating to such assessments and, in particular, looks at the extent and range of hypotheses that practitioners use. It is argued that, as in the child protection field, progress in collecting relevant information for assessments has not been matched by improvements in analysis and that practitioners may not be coping very well with the challenge of undertaking complex assessments." |

Résumé : |
"Information and communication technology (ICT) usage in contemporary child welfare practice reflects dominant managerial interests rather than those of the profession, and, importantly, of service users. Explicit use of ICT in the interests of service users remains embryonic, and professionals have been slow to capitalize on the communication potential of new technologies. This contrasts with technology uptake in other areas of human services. Unless this situation changes, client participation and power may decline further and managerial interests increasingly dominate." |

Résumé : |
"It is estimated that 12,900 of the 39,200 Australians who sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) each year live on with severe or profound permanent disability (BIAQ, 2006a). This project explores parental grief in response to the loss of normative lifespan development associated with ABI sustained in late adolescence or adulthood. While many people with ABI lack insight regarding the impact of their brain injury, for their parents, there is often an acute awareness of the loss which has occurred: the loss of a ‘normal’ future, and the loss of all the hopes and dreams associated with such ‘normal’ development." |

Résumé : |
"Policy makers at local, devolved and central government levels in the UK are much involved in the expansion of early intervention for children in both specialist targeted and mainstream services. They place much faith and anticipation in the notion of engaging early in the needs of children and young people and while this paper endorses the ambitions of early intervention, it asks how well placed are those sentiments that assume a relatively uncomplicated and positive role for such an approach. The paper addresses some key conceptual and practical features of early intervention services and explores a number of challenging themes that are likely to impede effective delivery." |

Résumé : |
"The study reported makes use of an existing database in order to examine a group of individuals assessed by approved social workers (ASWs) under the Mental Health Act, with a view to detention in psychiatric hospital. The study aims to develop a profile of these individuals, their pathways to assessment and the outcome of the assessments, and to examine the social implications of the findings. The study also seeks to identify changes over a nine-year period. The role of the ASW is reviewed in the light of the analysis of the nine-year information. Key features in the social situations of individuals are identified that may be associated with mental health need. Specific aspects of gender and life-stage vulnerability are suggested, as are poor material resources, isolation and lifestyle issues such as drug and alcohol misuse." |

Résumé : |
"There has been no large-scale study looking at the proportion of social work students in the UK who achieve the professional qualification, although there is some evidence that different groups experience different rates of progression. This article examines progression rates among students studying for the DipSW in England and analyses the factors that influence whether students achieve an award on time (defined as achieving an award without being referred, deferred, failing or withdrawing). The results show that male students, students from a black and minority ethnic group, and students with a self-reported disability have poorer progression rates. However, contrary to the picture in higher education as a whole, older students and students with previously lower levels of educational attainment do not have poorer progression rates." |

Résumé : |
"While there is some debate about what should be considered submissible evidence, there is no doubt that evidence-based practice has become accepted as a benchmark for service delivery in almost all areas of social work. This is not yet the case in the voluntary sector. Yet, social workers and service users rely heavily on voluntary sector services. In this paper, the effectiveness of voluntary sector services for victims of community violence is explored. Using Northern Ireland as a case in point, a time-series study was carried out with seventy-five service users who completed a research inventory up to four times across a nine to twelve-month period. Additional stressful life events that occurred during this time period were considered and social validity of services was assessed." |
