In the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, French health authorities and scientists only recommended the use of face masks if a person was a carrier of the virus or in direct contact with an infected person. The discovery of the major part played in virus transmission by asymptomatic subjects changed things in terms of population strategy, bringing out the concept for face masks fabrication (DIY masks, barrier masks or face-mask alter-natives) to meet the face-mask shortage. This article reviews the criteria selected for face masks fabrication in terms of filtration efficacy and mask design. Their place within the range of medi-cal masks and respiratory protection devices is detailed, as well as their indications, instructions for use and maintenance when they are reusable. |
