Titre : A qualitative research synthesis examining the effectiveness of interventions used by occupational therapists in mental health Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Katherine WIMPENNY, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p.276 - p.288 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : qualitative research synthesis effectiveness Résumé : Introduction
To date, a range of qualitative studies have been undertaken in intervention effectiveness, but none has synthesized such studies within the occupational therapy mental health literature. This research article presents a qualitative research synthesis that identifies those interventions used by occupational therapists, internationally, wich are viewed as effective from both clients' and carers' perspectives.
Method
Qualitative research synthesis was used to analyse, synthesize, and interpret results from qualitative studies. Twenty-two studies, collectively capturing client, carer, and occupational therapists' perspectives, were synthesized by the research team.
Findings
The findings identified four themes, wich indicated that the occupational therapist needs to exhibit professional artistry, facilitate occupational engagement, pace occupation to support the achievement of client goals and new horizons; and also recognized the importance of inclusion that promotes client participation and a sense of belonging in a range of socio-cultural contexts.
Conclusion
The use of occupational interventions that provide space for healing, self-rediscovery, identity formation, and community participation, were valued more than short, psychological-vased interventions focused on case management and the assessment of mental stability, which were seenas superficial in scope. Occupational therapists need to demonstrate an authentic therapeutic relationship that is built upon care, trust, and respect, in order for interventions to have impact.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33892

Exclu du prêtCoping strategies used by people with a major hand injury: a review of the literature / Elena Bates in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, volume 77 numéro 6 (Juin 2014)
[article]
Titre : Coping strategies used by people with a major hand injury: a review of the literature Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Elena Bates, Auteur ; Rosemarie Mason, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p.289 - p.295 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : hand injury coping strategies Résumé : Introduction
The hand is a highly specialized part of the body used to perform many functions. Injury causing permanent change affects a person biologically, psychologically, and socially. this literature review aims to study coping strategies that people adopt in order to deal with a major hand injury.
Method
A qualitative literature search was carried out using relevant databases. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, which resulted in eight appropriate papers. Each one was critically appraised and analysed in a narrative way for patterns, consistencies, and variance.
Findings
Coping strategies were found to alter over time. In the short term, strategies employed included avoidance, processing the trauma experience, seeking assistance, and maintaining control. In the long term, strategies included acceptance/resigantion, resuming occupations, and adjusting occupational roles. Recommandations for intervention included addressing psychosocial impacts, involving significant others in therapy, and incorporating occupational adaptation.
Conclusion
The effectiveness of coping strategies depends on the individual and their unique circumstances; hand therapists must work in a holistic and client-centred way to find effective strategies that meet the individual's needs. This involves addressing psychosocial and functional adaptation, as well as physical rehabilitation.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33893

Exclu du prêtWomen's experiences of being in an acute psychiatric unit: an occupational perspective / Jennifer Kennedy in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, volume 77 numéro 6 (Juin 2014)
[article]
Titre : Women's experiences of being in an acute psychiatric unit: an occupational perspective Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jennifer Kennedy, Auteur ; Tracy Fortune, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p.296 - p.303 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : mental illness women qualitative research Résumé : Introduction
The need to address gender sensitivity and implement strategies to improve the treatment of women within inpatient mental health facilities has gained international recognition. Ascertraining service users' perspectives is a critical prerequisite to ensure that potential strategies are appropriate. This study aimed to identify factors influencing the occupational engagment of women service users in an acute inpatient mental health unit in Melbourne, Australia.
Method
In this phenomenological study, five women were interviewed about their experiences of occupational engement. Data were anlysed according to Colaizzi's (1978) procedure, to generate an 'essence statement'. Fieldnotes were kept and an audit trail of the analysis process was recorded.
Findings
Three main themes emerged: (1) Living in hospital is difficult; (2) What we need from staff; and (3) More meaningful things to do, please.
Conclusion
Study findings highlight a need for more empathetic communication with staff, more effective use of the physical environment to enable improved perceptions of safety, and more meaningful occupational opportunities.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33894

Exclu du prêtFear avoidance beliefs, held by occupational therapists, are associated with treatment recommandations / Blair CROSS in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, volume 77 numéro 6 (Juin 2014)
[article]
Titre : Fear avoidance beliefs, held by occupational therapists, are associated with treatment recommandations Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Blair CROSS, Auteur ; Sarah DEAN, Auteur ; Jane HAY-SMITH, Auteur ; Mark WEATHERALL, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p.304 - p.312 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : fear avoidance beliefs chronic low back pain Résumé : Introduction
The purpose of this research was to explore whether New Zealand occupational therapists' recommendations for chronic low back pain are predicted by their fear avoidance beliefs.
Method
In an online survey, 63 therapists rated the strength of recommendation on a four-point Likert scale (for each of: home help, equipment provision, and environmental modification) for a case study of low back pain, and completed two questionnaires about fear avoidance beliefs. The strength of recommendation (definitely not, not likely, likely, definitely yes) was analysed as an ordinal scale response variable, with important predictors each of the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Tool and the Health Care Providers Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale. Potential confounding variables were: age, years in practice or pain practice, and receipt of extra pain educaiton. The main response variable was the probability of recommending home help. analysis was by proportional odds regression.
Findings
54/63 (85.7%) of the surveys had complete data. The adjusted odds ratio, per point higher on the fear avoidance belief scales, for therapists who were more likely to recommend home help was 1.19 (95% CI 1.06 to 1.35), p=0.005 for the Fear Avoidance Belief Tool and 1.16 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.29), p= 0.006 for Health Care Providers Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale. This is consistent with those with greater fear avoidance beliefs being more likelu to recommend home help.
Conclusion
Occupational therapists' fear avoidance beliefs are associated with treatment recommendations that lessen activity or movement demands. These beliefs are potentially unhelpful and may reinforce avoidance behaviour in patients with chronic low back pain.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33895
