Reminiscence triggers in community-dwelling older adults in Japan / Hideaki Hanaoka in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol.79 N°4 (April 2016)
[article]
Titre : Reminiscence triggers in community-dwelling older adults in Japan Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Hideaki Hanaoka ; Toshiaki Muraki ; Jacqueline Ede ; [et al...]
Introduction Visual and auditory cues have been highlighted as methods to trigger reminiscences; however, the basis of this practice remains unclear. Here we conducted a preliminary cross-sectional study to identify reminiscence cues and their scientific basis by investigating the relationship between reminiscences in elderly people and their reminiscence cues.
Method The participants were 126 older adults aged 65 years or over. They were asked about the experiences of reminiscences in response to stimuli such as photographs, music, or smells. Data on the frequency and quality of reminiscences were collected. Geriatric depression scale and simple personality test for the elderly were assessed.
Results A multiple regression analysis revealed that reminiscences tended to be more frequent in older and less sociable participants. Highly sociable participants with reminiscences in response to olfactory stimuli tended to have positive reminiscences, while participants with less sociability and past unresolved issues tended to have negative reminiscences.
Conclusion To understand the process of reminiscence in an older person, it is important to consider the person’s age, personality characteristics, and past unresolved issues. In addition, olfactory stimuli may also evoke pleasant reminiscences.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=45758

Nine women and seven men, mean age 59, underwent wrist joint arthroplasty, bilateral in one case. Universal Total Wrist and Remotion prostheses were used and followed-up at a mean of 5.2 years (1.1-10). Fifteen patients were reviewed. Four patients had postoperative complications, three of whom required arthrodesis. The rest obtained satisfactory pain relief. Grip strength nevertheless decreased compared to the contralateral side and mobility was reduced : flexion/extension = 33°, ulnar/radial deviation = 20°. The Quick DASH score was 29% and PRWE, 26%. Radiological assessment revealed carpal implant loosening in eight patients. Our series confirms the discordance generally observed between patients’ subjective satisfaction and mediocre clinical and radiological results over the medium term. Exclu du prêtA retrospective study of a multicomponent rehabilitation programme for community-dwelling persons with dementia and their caregivers / Elise Cornelis in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol.81 Issue 1 (January 2018)
[article]
Titre : A retrospective study of a multicomponent rehabilitation programme for community-dwelling persons with dementia and their caregivers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Elise Cornelis ; Ellen Gorus ; Ingo Beyer ; [et al...] Année de publication : 2018 Article en page(s) : p. 5-14 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : ergothérapie personne âgée démence réadaptation personnel soignant Résumé : Introduction
This study determined whether the multicomponent rehabilitation programme of a memory clinic had positive outcomes on ameliorating everyday functioning, quality of life, mood and behavioural disturbances of persons with dementia and reducing distress and burden of caregivers.
Method
A retrospective pre-test–post-test study without control group was conducted on the first cohort of persons with dementia (n = 30) and their caregivers (n = 30), who participated in a programme lasting for a maximum of 1 year with 25 1-hour counselling sessions. The assessment contained an evaluation of everyday functioning in basic, instrumental and advanced activities of daily living, cognition, mood, emotional and behavioural disturbances, quality of life and caregiver burden.
Results
Eight participants dropped out prematurely. For persons with dementia (n = 22), participating in the programme did not improve everyday functioning and cognition but ameliorated quality of life significantly (Z = –2.7, p = 0.006, 95% CI (.003–.005)) and stabilized mood, emotional and behavioural disturbances for 60% or more of them. For caregivers (n = 22), the mild to moderate burden of care remained stable or got better for 63.6% of the caregivers.
Conclusion
This programme appears to be promising and valuable, and might reduce institutionalization rates. Future explorations are recommended to research how participants evolve and to investigate which participants responded in a positive way.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=57827

Conclusion
Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=50083
