[article]
Titre : Social prescribing: An emerging area for occupational therapy Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Miranda Thew ; Fiona Bell ; Eithne Flanagan Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 523-524 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Social prescribing has been used in some form in the National Health Service (NHS) since the 1990s, but in recent years there has been increased interest and investment by the United Kingdom (UK) government to include a wider range of community interventions and activities (NHS England, 2014), in part to make the approach more sustainable (Dyson, 2014). Social prescribing links people, through general practitioner (GP), nurse or other primary care referral, to local non-medical and social welfare support agencies in the community that provide activities and social interactions that may benefit health. Social prescribing particularly targets populations facing significant social, economic or psychological risk factors that themselves contribute to many preventable diseases and conditions. Often these populations experience lifestyle and social challenges, such as smoking, drug or alcohol misuse and unemployment, which in addition may exacerbate underlying ill-health and disease (Dyson, 2014). The kinds of interventions or activities that may already exist, but would now be eligible for referral by a GP, range from ‘knit and natter’ clubs, health promotional educational groups, arts, creativity, learning and exercise on referral, to fishing clubs (Dyson, 2014). While dual-task approaches have clarified an association between cognitive processes and postural control, it is unclear how manual ability, which is also required for the successful completion of cognitively demanding tasks (such as putting a key into a lock), affects this relationship. Exclu du prêtDevelopmental coordination disorders and sensory processing and integration: Incidence, associations and co-morbidities / Susan Allen in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol.80 Issue 9 (September 2017)
[article]
Titre : Developmental coordination disorders and sensory processing and integration: Incidence, associations and co-morbidities Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Susan Allen ; Jackie Casey Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 549-557 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : troubles des habiletés motrices participation Trouble du spectre autistique Résumé : Introduction
Children with developmental coordination disorder or sensory processing and integration difficulties face challenges to participation in daily living. To date there has been no exploration of the co-occurrence of developmental coordination disorders and sensory processing and integration difficulties.
Method
Records of children meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – V criteria for developmental coordination disorder (n = 93) age 5 to 12 years were examined. Data on motor skills (Movement Assessment Battery for Children – 2) and sensory processing and integration (Sensory Processing Measure) were interrogated.
Results
Of the total sample, 88% exhibited some or definite differences in sensory processing and integration. No apparent relationship was observed between motor coordination and sensory processing and integration. The full sample showed high rates of some difficulties in social participation, hearing, body awareness, balance and motion, and planning and ideation. Further, children with co-morbid autistic spectrum disorder showed high rates of difficulties with touch and vision.
Conclusion
Most, but not all, children with developmental coordination disorder presented with some difficulties in sensory processing and integration that impacted on their participation in everyday activities. Sensory processing and integration difficulties differed significantly between those with and without co-morbid autistic spectrum disorder.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=52701

Exclu du prêtReliability and validity of the multiple mini interview (MMI) for admissions to an occupational therapy professional program / Aliki Thomas in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol.80 Issue 9 (September 2017)
[article]
Titre : Reliability and validity of the multiple mini interview (MMI) for admissions to an occupational therapy professional program Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Aliki Thomas ; Meredith Young ; Barbara Mazer ; [et al...] Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 558-567 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : ergothérapie reproductibilité des résultats profession Résumé : Introduction
Admissions decisions are among the most consequential assessment points in educating occupational therapists. Suboptimal measures of academic achievement and personal characteristics are often used to select candidates. The purpose of the study is to investigate reliability and validity evidence supporting the use of the multiple mini interview for selecting candidates to an occupational therapy master’s level program.
Method
The study used a prospective cohort design. Data sources included both archival data and prospective candidate-generated data (multiple mini interview scores, applicant file review scores and academic performance), analyzed using psychometric and correlational approaches.
Results
Seventy-seven of 80 candidates participated in the prospective component of the study. Overall reliability of a 10-station multiple mini interview was .72. Inter-rater reliability was reasonable. Weak interrelationships were found between multiple mini interview scores and other application components.
Conclusion
Multiple mini interview scores may be probing different attributes than the other components of the application package. Our study findings support the use of the multiple mini interview for selecting applicants to a professional master’s program in occupational therapy; however, future work should continue to investigate the predictive validity of the multiple mini interview.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=52702

Exclu du prêtBarriers and facilitators of participation in intervention research by mental health occupational therapists / Mary Birken in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Vol.80 Issue 9 (September 2017)
[article]
Titre : Barriers and facilitators of participation in intervention research by mental health occupational therapists Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Mary Birken ; Elyse Couch ; Mary Morley Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 568-572 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : participation recherche santé mentale Résumé : Statement of context
Occupational therapists in clinical practice are required to deliver interventions within clinical trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions. Challenges to participation in intervention research by occupational therapists working in community mental health have been identified and require further investigation.
Critical reflection on practice
A cross-sectional online survey of occupational therapists working in mental health was used, and obtained a 50% (n = 144) response rate. Limited time, large generic caseloads, and lack of skills and experience in research were identified barriers to participation in occupational therapy intervention research. Occupational therapists had limited dedicated time to carry out occupational therapy interventions and outcome measurement was limited.
Implications for practice
Occupational therapy roles need to be regained in adult community mental health alongside routine outcome measurement. This will enable occupational therapy interventions to contribute to community mental health services and support participation in clinical trials of occupational therapy interventions.Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=52703
