CVITANOVICH Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p. 661-669 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Vie quotidienne Adaptation Psychologie Sclérose plaque Résumé : OBJECTIVE. We examined the correlations between quality of life and three adaptation factors—adjusted self-concept, social support, and accessibility—in people with multiple sclerosis (MS).
METHOD. A convenience sample of 68 participants completed the Leeds Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life scale (LMSQoL) and a questionnaire assessing the three adaptation factors.
RESULTS. We found significant moderate correlations between LMSQoL scores and adjusted self-concept (r = .56, p < .0001) and LMSQoL scores and social support (r = .52, p < .0001); a significant low correlation was found between LMSQoL and accessibility (r = .36, p = .003).
DISCUSSION. Adjusted self-concept, social support, and accessibility were found to be critical in participants’ psychosocial adaptation to the course of MS. Occupational therapy intervention should address these aPermalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14025

Titre : Development and Validation of a 15-Item Lifestyle Screening for Community-Dwelling Older Adults Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jengliang Eric HWANG Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p. 738 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Personne âgée Condition vie Résumé : The Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile–Screener (HELP–Screener) is a 15-item self-report questionnaire conceptually excerpted from the original 56-item HELP. This article describes the development and validation of the HELP–Screener with a sample of 483 community-dwelling older adults. Data derived from the sample were first analyzed using the Rasch dichotomous model. Unidimensionality and data–model fit of the HELP–Screener were largely supported by the analyses of principal components of residuals, fit statistics, local dependency, differential item functioning, and item hierarchy. To delineate the clinical significance of the test results, the cutoff score for the HELP–Screener was established through the mean and standard deviation generated from the study sample. The HELP–Screener can serve as a time-efficient screening for identifying older adults who may require a comprehensive evaluation through HELP and, as a result, who may benefit from a lifestyle intervention. Of note, more studies are planned to further corroborate psychometric properties of this new instrument. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14038

Titre : Personal factors predictive of health-related lifestyles of community-dwelling older adults Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Terry PERALTA-CATIPON ; Jengliang Eric HWANG Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p. 329-337 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Personne âgée Vie quotidienne Indicateur santé [épidémiologie] Résumé : We explored personal factors that can predict health-related lifestyles of community-dwelling older adults. A convenience sample of 253 older adults was recruited to complete the Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile(HELP), a comprehensive measure of health-promoting behaviors. Data were analyzed through univariate correlational/comparative statistics followed by stepwise multiple regression analysis to determine significant predictor variables for different aspects of health-related lifestyle. Personal health conditions, including the number of chronic diseases or impairments and self-rated health, were two strong predictors for the HELP(R2 5 .571, p < .0001). Demographic characteristics, including age, gender, race, education, and employment status, also demonstrated varied degrees of capability for predicting the different HELP scales (e.g., Exercise, Diet, Leisure). When developing individualized plans for older adults in community settings, occupational therapists should consider the clients’ strengths and vulnerabilities potentially derived from personal health factors and demographic attributes to yield more effective lifestyle interventions. Titre : Promoting healthy lifestyles with aging : development and validation of the health enhancement lifestyle profile (HELP) using the Rasch Measurement Model Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jengliang Eric HWANG Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 786-795 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Condition vie Promotion santé Résumé : This study was conducted to develop and validate the Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile (HELP), a selfreport measure for examining various aspects of health-related lifestyle in older adults. Data derived from 253 community-dwelling older adults were analyzed through the Rasch measurement model. Unidimensionality and data-model fit of HELP were largely supported through the analyses of principal components of residuals, fit statistics, local dependency, and differential item functioning. The item hierarchy formed through logits provided an expected pattern of healthy lifestyle behaviors. Acceptable to good person separation and reliability statistics supported the clinical applicability and consistency of the HELP scores. Finally, analysis of the rating scale structure confirmed the functioning of the 0- to 5-point rating scale used. HELP can assist in monitoring lifestyle risk factors and measuring the outcome of services aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles among older adults. Titre : Reliability of the Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile–Screener (HELP–Screener) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jengliang Eric HWANG Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : p. 118 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Personne âgée Habitude Résumé : This study examined reliability of the Health Enhancement Lifestyle Profile–Screener (HELP–Screener), a 15-item self-report questionnaire serving as an initial screening of lifestyle behaviors for older adults. The internal consistency of HELP–Screener was analyzed using data derived from a sample of 483 older adults. The resultant Cronbach’s α coefficient of .74 indicated an acceptable level of internal consistency. The test–retest reliability study with 90 participants yielded an intraclass correlation coefficient of .93, indicating a high degree of temporal stability of the instrument at the scale level. Moreover, good to excellent degrees of agreement found through the κ statistic (ks = .76–.96) and percentage of agreement (96%–99%) between the test and retest scores of each item further supported HELP–Screener’s test–retest reliability at the item level. Future studies should determine other aspects of psychometric properties and clinical suitability of this new instrument. Permalink : ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=14219
