Résumé : |
"High thresholds for receipt of children’s services have become a major concern in recent policy documents. This concern involves the lack of access for such families whose circumstances are such that they have considerable need of them. A further concern is that, without access to these services, families will be referred later with more serious problems that will require intervention, and use more resources. This paper seeks to test this assertion by examining the outcomes at six months for service applicants who receive only an initial assessment, but are not given further intervention." |

Résumé : |
"The experience of out-of-home care has the potential to impact on children’s psycho-social outcomes in significant ways. This article highlights the interactive contribution of carers, teachers and children to the fostering experience. The paper reports on a strand of a longitudinal study of children in long-term foster-care. Using a mixed-methods, repeated-measures, multi-informant approach, it focuses on emotional, behavioural and educational outcomes." |

Résumé : |
"Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centred, directive counselling method. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a two-day workshop in MI for forty social workers in changing self-reported practice over a three-month period, the levels of skills achieved, and factors associated with acquired skills, including the impact of post-workshop supervision. The focus of training was alcohol misuse but participants were encouraged to explore the use of MI with other issues. A multi-method pre and post-design was used, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data and employing an embedded randomized controlled trial of the impact of supervision." |

Résumé : |
"The protection of children, whether living at home or in residential care, is a core endeavour of residential and field social work with children. Yet, despite broad support from politicians, policy makers and the majority of the public for this work, child protection practice and practitioners are frequently criticized for perceived or actual failures to protect." |

Résumé : |
"The promotion of independence is a dominant theme in policy on old age and is also a principle used to guide social work practice with older people. This qualitative study of older people’s experiences of independence reveals that independence is a complex notion with a variety of meanings. In-depth interviews with older Australians elicited five main discourses on independence: doing things alone; making one’s own decisions; physical and mental capacity; having resources; social standing and self-esteem. Whilst the goal of independence was strongly upheld by the older people, negative experiences associated with independence were also revealed. Based on the experiences of these older people, the findings of this study offer insights for social workers prepared to move beyond individualistic interpretations of independence and promote socially inclusive independence." |

Résumé : |
"The development of community care policy and practice in the UK has taken place in the context of the growth of neo-liberal ideologies and managerialism. This has had an impact on service provision and professional practice which has been pronounced in statutory agencies. Research evidence indicates that the workforce in adult social care is demoralized and de-motivated and that there is dissonance between working practices and social work education. Empirical research undertaken in 2003 found difficulties at three levels: structural, managerial and practitioner." |

Résumé : |
"Researchers, practitioners and policy makers have noted the disproportionate number of young women with backgrounds of local authority care who are involved in commercial sex. However, the lack of knowledge about why this occurs means that there is little evidence with which to develop interventions. This article describes research that explored young women’s routes into the sex industry from local authority care using a feminist participatory action approach. The women’s life-story narratives demonstrate that the psycho-social legacies of their care experiences—how they defined themselves and placed themselves in the world—were instrumental in their entry into selling sex." |

Résumé : |
"The importance of building a trusting relationship with clients has been acknowledged and emphasized by helping professions such as social work, psychotherapy, nursing, and medicine. A review of literature reveals the presence of three approaches to trust development, each emphasizing one of the components of a trusting relationship: the client’s trusting attitude, the professional’s trusting characteristics, and the characteristics of the relationship that exists between the client and the professional. The contention of this paper is that the trust described by these approaches is the initial trust necessary for starting a relationship with a service provider." |
