Previous research has investigated parental reports of attachment in families with mental health problems, but relationship representations as experienced by these children, especially in middle childhood, have not been so frequently investigated. An understanding of children’s representations of attachment relationships and the different coping strategies that may result is important for social work practice when offering support, not only to the children, but also other family members. Methods of investigating attachment, such as the Separation Anxiety Test, have been used to understand the relationship issues, fears and coping strategies of other vulnerable children, and this study was designed specifically to investigate relationship issues in middle childhood children whose mothers had previously been hospitalized with mental health problems. We found that these children tended to be less emotionally open and secure, and generated fewer adaptive coping strategies than children whose mothers had never had mental health problems. Other themes also emerged from the interviews, such as a sense of trust in the parent–child relationship and the ‘containment’ of fears. Implications for social work practice are discussed." Communication # Internet # Placement # PratiqueRésumé : "In an increasingly digital age, expectations of foster carers and social workers to embrace information and communication technologies in order to enhance communication and reduce digital division are also raised. This article reports on the introduction, in three English local authority fostering services, of a purpose- designed internet service, which aims to improve information flow to foster carers, enhance interaction and information exchange between foster carers and social workers, provide a social networking facility for communication between carers within a secure environment and create the potential for new relationships to emerge within a ‘community of fostering practice’." Enfants:Enfants -- Protection, assistance, etc.:Placement d'enfants en milieu familialMots-clés : Angleterre Norvège Résumé : "Parents of children growing up in foster-care have been a largely neglected group in policy, practice and research, in spite of the fact that these parents are often vulnerable adults who experience a profound loss and a threat to their identity. Parents' involvement through contact is also likely to have an impact on children's stability and security in the foster family. This article draws on data from parallel qualitative studies at the University of East Anglia, England, the University of Bergen, Norway, and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Interviews and focus groups with parents showed a great deal of similarity in the situation experienced by parents in the three countries."
