Chronic Child Abuse : The Characteristics and Careers of Children Caught in the Child Protection System / John Devaney in The british journal of social work, 1, vol. 39 (January 2009)
[article]
Titre : Chronic Child Abuse : The Characteristics and Careers of Children Caught in the Child Protection System Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John Devaney, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : pp. 24-45 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : TS
Enfants:Enfants -- Protection, assistance, etc.Résumé : "The introduction of the Quality Protects initiative in England and the focus on performance management has challenged social services departments to examine the systems, processes and outcomes for children who have their name on a child protection register. Research indicates that approximately one-quarter of the situations in which children are registered could be described as chronic—that is, they remain on the child protection register for significant periods of time, experience more than one period of registration or suffer a further incident of significant harm whilst subject to a child protection plan. In this article, the findings from a research study conducted into this group of vulnerable children are reported, focusing on the characteristics of the children and their families, and their careers in the child protection system. The paper concludes with observations about the weak conceptualization of performance management and the need to recognize the complexity of the factors that influence children’s careers in the child protection system." Enfants:Enfants -- Protection, assistance, etc.Résumé : "Whilst child welfare systems in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States may share a number of common goals, they are not designed to identify families with multiple problems. Where system output measures have been utilised as proxy measures to detect such families they indicate the presence of families in the population served by child and family social work. In interviews with practitioners and managers working within contrasting welfare systems, we explore how families with multiple problems are identiifed, what repsonses they currently recieve and how their needs might be better met." Enfants:Enfants -- Protection, assistance, etc.Résumé : "There is significant public and professional interest in the non-accidental death of children where abuse and neglect are suspected of being contributory factors. Systems for reviewing these deaths have been developed in each of the four jurisdictions within the UK. The main aims are to ensure that individuals and professionals are held to account if practice falls below the expected standard, whilst also seeking to strengthen the systems for protecting children through reflecting on what lessons, if any, can be learnt from the death of a child through abuse or neglect."
