Résumé : |
"There is little national or international research that examines how Family Group Conferences (FGCs) are being used with, or viewed by, black and minority ethnic (BME) children and families. This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a FGC project by Building Bridges, a service commissioned to address the psychological and mental health needs of BME children and their families in Liverpool (UK). The evaluation uses both quantitative and qualitative information to explore the use of the FGC model within diverse communities and contexts. The authors conclude that although the model is effective and culturally appropriate, there may be challenges in terms of the range and depth of needs that can be met through the FGC intervention model. Suggestions are made for maximising the cultural application of the model and recommendations are made for further research to explore the views of BME children and their families." |

Résumé : |
"Child protection investigations and the number of children on Child Protection Registers are high and constantly rising. In the UK, professionals are bound by legislation to uphold the rights of children and young people in matters that concern them and impact upon their lives. Previous research that examined young people's perceptions of the Child Protection System (CPS) has shown many areas of dissatisfaction. In this current Scottish study, eleven children and young people (six aged between twelve and fifteen years, five aged sixteen years or over) were consulted about their experience of the CPS in a Scottish local authority." |

Résumé : |
"Foucault's analytical methods of archaeology and genealogy reveal that South African child welfare thinking cannot be clearly divided into an apartheid and post-apartheid epoch. Rather, this history of the present identifies that a Child Protection discourse continues to dominate current child welfare legislation and policies, both at a state and an agency level, even while the language of a Developmental Social Welfare discourse is utilised. The dominance of the Child Protection discourse allows service users and service providers to be constructed in such a way that maintains the use of an intrusive, individualistic approach to child welfare that effectively overlooks the impact of structural factors on the lives of vulnerable children and their families. Archaeology and genealogy provide valuable tools for uncovering the dominant and marginalised discourses and for analyzing the circulation of power within a particular child welfare system." |

Résumé : |
"The purpose of this paper is to critically analyse ‘cultural competence’ as a theoretical construct and re-conceptualise it within the framework of Emanuel Levinas' theory of ‘Other’. Drawing on the work of the French philosopher (1905–95), this article discusses dominant mainstream conceptions of cultural competence through an examination of the complexity inherent in the intersection and relationship between the two value-laden concepts of ‘cultural competence’ and ‘Other’. The paper provides a theoretical overview of the concept, presents Levinas' conceptualisation of the ‘Other’, examines epistemological and ethical stances with regard to ‘Self’ and ‘Other’, and discusses the theoretical and practical implications for the social work profession." |

Résumé : |
"This article explores the nature of professional integrity, considering the questions ‘what is professional integrity?’ and ‘how do social welfare practitioners perform as people of integrity in the course of their professional work?’ The focus is on social welfare work, with a particular emphasis on social work as practised in England. Three versions of professional integrity are identified as: morally right conduct; commitment to a set of deeply held values; and a capacity for reflexive sense-making and reliable accountability. These are explored through examples from professional misconduct cases in social care and accounts from professional practitioners about their working lives. Key elements of professional integrity are identified and implications for policy, practice and education are considered." |

Résumé : |
"This article explores the need for a framework that will assist social workers to identify when religion and belief are significant in the lives and circumstances of service users and how to take sufficient account of these issues in specific pieces of practice. It outlines the Furness / Gilligan framework and suggests that such frameworks should be used as a part of any assessment, while also being potentially useful at all stages of intervention. It reports on feedback gathered by the authors from first and final MA Social Work students who were asked to pilot the framework. It analyses their responses, in the context of national and international literature. It concludes that such a framework provides the necessary structure and challenge to assist social workers in acknowledging and engaging with issues arising from religion and belief that otherwise may remain overlooked, ignored or avoided, regardless of how significant they are to service users." |

Résumé : |
"The Samaritans of New York public education suicide awareness and prevention programme is designed to train lay and professional staff on effective suicide prevention practices and how to ‘befriend’ a person in crisis. However, little is known about the individual-level characteristics of staff who attend these trainings. Community- and school-based staff (N = 365) completed pre- and post-training measures of self-efficacy regarding their knowledge about suicide and suicide prevention and their ability to intervene with individuals at risk for suicide." |

Résumé : |
"This article discusses the nature of practice in social work and criminal justice. Reporting on a small study involving fifteen experienced probation officers, it considers how they responded to an environment that has changed drastically from the ‘clinical’ mode of practice in which they trained to the ‘punitive managerial’ mode of practice in which they were working at the time of the interviews. The study concludes that experienced professionals use their abilities as reflective practitioners to resist the worst excesses of punitive managerialism. Continuing their commitment to balancing the demands of justice and care, they develop a practice that is not merely the straightforward application of technique, but is based upon their relational skills and abilities to develop constructive working relationships with service users." |

Résumé : |
"This paper presents arguments for recognising and tackling Hepatitis C (HCV) as a major challenge for social work. Despite repeated warnings from a variety of sources and thousands of new infections each year, successive governments have failed to address a public health emergency of immense proportions—the HCV epidemic. The implications for social work are significant. Social care workers, particularly those working with physically disabled adults or older adults, will find themselves with vastly increased caseloads as HCV diagnoses increase. This will necessitate them being able to adequately support families in a non-judgemental and non-stigmatising manner, which will mean a significant expansion of training and awareness-raising among professionals, in addition to strong inter-agency links and a transparent integrated care pathway." |

Résumé : |
"This paper examines the theoretical underpinnings of an ongoing, innovative, arts-based social intervention research study in light of contemporary theory on knowledge production. It begins by outlining the nature of the study, which seeks to raise community awareness of domestic violence, and the context in which it is being conducted. Thereafter, it examines the relationship between social work and art and argues that the situated knowledge of Mode 2 knowledge production is more useful for social workers—and artists—engaged in participatory community practice than science-driven Mode 1." |

Résumé : |
"The purpose of this article is to briefly review the most influential existing literature on conceptualizing and measuring empathy. In addition, we consider a second, highly salient body of literature emerging from the relatively new field of social cognitive neuroscience, which uses brain imaging to help identify the physiological components of emotional and cognitive processes. We believe that social cognitive neuroscience can assist social work in clarifying concrete, consistent ways of defining and measuring empathy as a neurological phenomenon. Finally, we assess some of the most recent social work-related empirical intervention-based research on empathy. Combining all these research traditions leads to a compelling possibility: a unified, consistent, and robust way to define and measure the empathic responses that help form the foundation of just and beneficent social structures." |
