Enfants maltraitésMots-clés : Jugement professionnel Résumé : "Professionals encountering possible cases of child neglect face a complex task when judging whether a particular concern warrants a referral to social work services. A study of referral practice in cases of child neglect, completed in the Republic of Ireland, highlighted that it is not just the nature of the concern that influences referral practice but a range of other factors that are not related to the needs of the specific child." Institutions sociales # Marginalité # ParoleRésumé : "In the last decade, a new sociology of childhood has made important contributions to our understanding of children as social agents shaping their daily lives in various contexts and situations. Although social difference and diverse childhood experiences hold a central place in these new paradigms, several researchers have noted the neglect of black1 children in mainstream research agendas, with little attention paid to their lived experiences in social institutions. This conceptual paper begins with a brief discussion exploring the intersections between black children, marginalization and childhood studies. The following section reviews ongoing concerns implicated in the high presence of black children in public care. By applying theories about childhood to children in public care generally and specifically to black children, this paper advocates participatory approaches to incorporate new initiatives in working with black children in public care." Criminalité # Criminologie # Education # ÉtudiantsRésumé : "In light of the Bichard Inquiry, this paper considers the vetting practices that apply in relation to those students with criminal convictions who apply to undertake social work education in England or Wales. The paper is organized primarily around the lessons that can be learnt from two case studies, and descriptions of how a range of social work programmes in England and Wales assess individuals with criminal convictions. It explores some of the reasons why the assessment of individuals with previous criminal convictions is important, some of the issues that might arise in relation to how it is currently carried out and what might constitute best practice in this area." Confidentialité # Ruralité # Travail socialRésumé : "Social workers in rural areas often live and work in the communities that they serve. Consequently, they may have, or later develop, dual relationships with service users. These ‘out of hours’ connections raise some complex issues about how social workers conduct their practice and comport themselves socially within the wider community. This paper reviews the notion of dual relationships and assesses the schema proposed for assessing their ethical probity. Its conclusion is that the practical realities of rural practice challenge absolutist conceptions of confidentiality and undermine assumptions of objectivity and neutrality in professional stance."
