"This paper discusses findings from a recently completed study of adolescent foster care, which included a detailed assessment of the fostering skills and supports of carers and of the contact that adolescents had with parents, siblings and other family members during a long-term foster placement. Sixty-eight foster carers, young people and their social workers were interviewed at two points in time, 3 months after the start of a new foster placement and again at 12 months or at the point of disruption if this occurred earlier. Detailed questions about contact which were asked of foster carers, young people and their social workers enabled the researchers to make summary ratings about the quantity and the quality of contact and its effect on the young people and on their placements. This paper describes the contact the young people had with their families, its impact on them and on the foster families and how it changed over time. The findings revealed that contact for the majority of adolescents was problematic and had a significant impact on placement outcomes. Ways of managing contact are highlighted, and the corresponding implications for policy and practice discussed." |

"The thrust of UK adoption policy is to promote adoption as the best route to a stable family life for children in the care system unable to return to their birth families. However, what we know about outcomes for adopted children comes mainly from studies that report on children already in placement. This article reports on the findings of a study that examined the outcomes of a complete sample of 130 older looked after children who had all been the subject of an adoption best interest decision. Many were successfully placed but, of those who were not, the study was able to identify factors that influenced placement outcome. The negative impact on placement outcomes and the increased financial costs of poor assessment and delays in planning and action are highlighted in this paper. The reasons why delays occurred, the costs of those delays and the impact on child outcomes lend support to recent government attempts to reduce delay by the introduction of timescales into the adoption process." |

"This paper introduces the Delphi research method and analyses its usefulness in multi-agency research. In particular, the authors examine how it was used in a project aimed at making the material generated by the Victoria Climbié Inquiry accessible to child welfare/protection professionals through organizing the oral evidence in such a way that it can become a web-based data corpus. The thematic analysis of research data-sets usually only reflects the theoretical and analytical ideas of the researchers; however, our research demonstrates that using the Delphi method incorporates thematic ideas both from researchers and from active professionals, thereby pooling expertise. Thus we argue that the Delphi method represents a valuable tool in multidisciplinary child welfare research as it embeds a breadth of expertise throughout the research process." |

"This paper reports the findings of a survey of parents whose children attended 52-week residential schools. Seventy-three parents completed a postal questionnaire which asked questions about three main areas: support and services received prior to their child’s entry into residential education; perceptions of the quality of care and education provided by residential schools; and concerns for their child’s future care and welfare. Telephone interviews were conducted with 14 parents, to obtain additional information on the topics addressed by the questionnaire. Parents were critical of services and support received prior to their child’s entry into residential education and reported high rates of exclusion from local services. Residential schools were generally perceived as providing a good quality of service, though considerable concern was expressed about their geographical distance from the family home, and this had a significant impact on the frequency of visits. Parents expressed high levels of concern about the future care and support needs of their children. Further research is required to understand the relationship between the availability and quality of local services and the need for 52-week residential schools. The impact of distant residential education on parent–child relationships and on future demand for residential care is considered." |

"This qualitative study of the feelings and concerns of social work student trainees regarding their end-of-year treatment termination paint a picture of great personal distress. As the students see it, the premature termination prevented them from reaching their treatment goals, did not suit the needs of the clients, and raised serious ethical questions. Their feelings included sadness and regret, frustration, and uncertainty about their professional capacities. They expressed concern that clients would not manage on their own, anxiety that the premature separation might harm the clients, and, above all, a great deal of guilt. Recommendations are offered for alleviating students’ distress and helping them to better cope with it." |
