Narrating Significant Experience : Reflective Accounts and the Production of (Self) Knowledge / Carolyn Taylor in The british journal of social work, 36/2 (fév. 2006)

Réflexivité (philosophie)Mots-clés : Pratique sociale Reflexivité Narration Méthodologie Analyse Résumé : "Notwithstanding the rise of evidence-based practice, other tendencies within social work scholarship are also discernible. One of these is the study of the everyday, routine accomplishment of practice, drawing on microsociological methods and techniques. In this article, I apply techniques drawn from narrative and discourse analysis to the study of reflective practice accounts, which hold an important place in social work education. In particular, it is relevant to examine the form that reflective accounts take and the rhetorical and narrative devices deployed within them to accomplish a competent professional identity. My argument is not that such accounts of practice are untruthful, rather I propose that we would do well to move beyond taking texts (and talk) for granted and treating language as merely the medium for expressing inner thoughts and feelings. Social work should take seriously the need to explore its modes of representation and to cultivate a more self-conscious approach to the way professional and client identities are produced in practice." In order to help practitioners and policymakers identify and act on the basis of high quality evidence, ways of assessing the quality of this knowledge are needed. Part of the answer may lie in the use of a set of generic standards. To test the potentiality of this approach, one document from each of five core domains of social care knowledge was selected and assessed independently by three researchers using a set of generic standards developed within a study commissioned by the Social Care Institute for Excellence." This article offers a synopsis of issues arising from a review of social work and social care research funded through the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). Following a brief scene setting, the first main section of the article gives a synopsis of the social work and social care community’s experience and judgements regarding their engagement with the research council. Prise de risqueMots-clés : Jeune Conduite à risque Travail social Résumé : "Policy makers, professionals and the public have become increasingly concerned with identifying and managing young people who are not only troubled or at risk, but troubling or risky. Social work, however, has been relatively silent on the subject. In social work practice, young people have become largely ‘someone else’s problem’; in the academy, relatively little critical attention has been given to their risk taking, or to the way we ‘make’ or construct it. This paper takes an exploratory rather than systematically comprehensive journey, across a range of discursive terrains, to open up the debate. Examining current concerns with youth and risk, it explores some of the social and psychological theory bases whereby youth is constructed as a risky business." Enfants:Enfants -- Protection, assistance, etc.Mots-clés : Evaluation Enfant Protection de l'enfance Angleterre Résumé : "This paper is based on a qualitative research study of social workers’ and parents’ experiences of attempts to ‘refocus’ child protection practice in England since the late 1990s. A review of the research base for the refocusing initiative is presented, leading to an exploration of one of the key changes arising from the initiative: the move away from investigations in ‘borderline’ cases towards less intrusive initial assessments. Methods involved qualitative interviews with parents and social workers in twenty-three cases drawn from two local authorities." It discusses the centrality of single motherhood for the redefinition of the relationships of shared well-being among citizens and proposes the frameworks of discourse analysis and identity construction as central in contemporary debates. The paper examines the discourses of an agency servicing teen mothers and explicates some strategies through which these discourses perform an entitled teen motherhood."
